In Tough Times, Focus on Solutions, Not Problems

When we go through tough times, we tend to focus solely on the mess. We become so overwhelmed with the drama that we further delay the process. In this state of mind, we may ignore any suggestions that could quickly get us back on track. Rather than look for someone to blame, we need to recognize that this is an opportunity for us to grow. It’s better to move on with a few bruises than to be stuck in a rut waiting for the problem to disappear. Let’s turn the way we deal with our setbacks, into a superpower.

Instead of being overwhelmed by the problem and elevating it to god status, we should come away with the lessons it teaches us. It is in this process that we master endurance and build a foundation for success.

What if I told you there is a beautiful butterfly waiting to come forth — a great testimony that could be helpful to many?

When we beat ourselves up and wish we could tunnel our way back in time to fix things, we create more problems. The only action that takes place happens in our minds. Hopefully, our frustration leads to desperation and finally, a cry for help. A ‘last resort’ prayer to God but a prayer nonetheless – that’s where we should have started.

Life comprises all kinds of experiences, good and bad. This is the result of being human (though not an excuse). We must learn from the ups and downs and continue the race to fulfil our purpose.

We can’t change the past and life must go on one way or the other. That quality of life/future will now be determined by making good choices and trying not to repeat the same mistakes which led to our demise.

In time, this unpleasant event becomes another memory. Listed among the many experiences and building blocks that continue to make us who we are.

Life happens but as we persevere, we discover wisdom, strength and tons of value we can share with others. We can trade this value to build meaningful relationships — point others to shorter paths to success, and help people who are at the brink of despair.

Why we become crippled by our situations and not look for the life lessons in them, is easier said than done, I know.

Here are a few things to remember:

1. LIFE ISN’T FAIR BUT GOD IS

Some say life is not fair and this is true. This is because we live in an unjust world made up of predominantly selfish people, with varying perceptions of right and wrong.

There are also variables that are impossible to control. As a result, some have had it easy and some have suffered hardship. But, our aspirations will determine how quickly we subdue and overcome any problem.

A firm belief in God, purpose-filled living, and a positive mindset will cause us to endure the tough times.

Every one of us has special abilities regardless of our various backgrounds but we still have some things in common. Particularly, the potential to fulfill our purpose and reason for living. This should be the only measurement of our personal success.

Be careful about how we define success. It doesn’t necessarily equate to lots of money.

God has made us all equal. Life isn’t fair but we all have the privilege of pursuing success in spite of our situation.

2. WE MUST ACCEPT FORGIVENESS

When we focus on problems without trusting in God to forgive our mistakes, we stagnate our vision. Time spent wasted on fear and doubt will rob us of the time we could be pursuing our goals. God is able to forgive anything we ask of him.

3. FORGIVE OTHERS

People are capable of forgiving one another as well. Unfair or not, in order for us to move on, we must forgive. Understanding this principle keeps us humble. This is the common ground we all share as human beings. It allows us to return the compassion we too will need at some point.

4. HAVE A STRATEGY

If there’s a strategy for dealing with our problems rationally, we are closer to overcoming them.

“Turn your mess into a message” cliche, yes, but it’s the whole point.

5. WE MUST ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY

A big part of accepting responsibility is learning humility. We have to rid ourselves of pride to begin the rebuilding process. A question to ask ourselves is, “Did we do anything to bring the tough times on ourselves?”

6. WE NEED GOD

He is bigger than our problems; by focusing on God, we tap into the infinite source of power, wisdom, and authority. This assurance will change our perspective and release us from any negative circumstance. Having that faith in him gives us the confidence to overcome every obstacle, without any remnant of guilt.

By focusing on God we are not saying to wait and do nothing. Inherent in that focus is a series of steps that will relieve us of unnecessary stress and worry.

Tough times and problems point us to God and make us better human beings.

7. WE CAN’T CHANGE THE PAST

Most importantly, acknowledge that we can’t change the past and what’s done is done. However, rejoice in the fact that we now have valuable lessons to share.

Your success may not lie only in your own personal achievements, but what you can pass on to others.

Problems develop your superpower; go conquer the world.

To everything there  is a season, A time for every purpose under heaven:

Ecclesiastes 3:1 NKJV
